Meet Father God
First off, Meeting the Father is nothing like the film ‘Meet the Parents’. You know, where the prospective son-in-law (Ben Stiller) has to meet his potential father-in-law (Robert De Niro). And of course the father-in-law turns out to be this crazed, control freak who reduces Ben to a pile of disaster-attracting jelly.
Yep, well this is nothing like that. Except, let’s back up a bit to your own experience of fathers. Cos joking aside, to many people Father is a four letter word. You might be about as enthused about meeting your Heavenly Father as Ben’s character was about spending the weekend with his father-in-law.
We can’t help it, if we’ve had a negative experience of fathers, we automatically project it onto Father God. So we have all these preconceived ideas that he is distant or angry or violent or cold or missing altogether.
Except that this is in no way what he is like. Really.
No, really.
Just imagine the best father you’ve ever met, or seen in a film, or read about in a book. Go on, think of the guy that you would totally pick to be your Dad. Ok, now multiply how great that guy is by about 83 billion. (You can use a calculator if you want). Still, he is not even close to being as cool, kind, imaginative, fun, understanding, protective, insightful, or safe as the ultimate Daddy – Daddy God.
If you want to know just how mind-expandingly brilliant Father is, just take a look at Jesus. Jesus is a carbon copy of his Father. He is like the Father in every way. And the Father is like Jesus in every way.
Every word that Jesus spoke, every act that he performed was not his own idea or initiative – but he was just doing what he saw the Father do.
Jesus explained to us that he is ‘the way’. The way where? To heaven. Well, actually what he said was that he is the way to the Father. (John 14.6)
Everything that we desire, need, long for, and lack is found complete in Father. He is the one that we have been looking for our whole lives. He is the destination. He is home. (John 14.1)
He is comfort. He is validation. He is purpose. He is peace. He’s the real deal.
He’s not just your ‘adopted Dad’ – he is your real father. He conceived you before the world was created (Ephesians 1,4), created you, loves you and sent Jesus to come and get you.
After Jesus was raised from the dead he said, “I am returning to my Father and your Father”(John 20.17). Jesus uses the term “Abba”. This is a very intimate term, meaning Daddy or Papa.
You can know this Daddy. You can meet him and be fathered by him every day of your life. Fathered in the most tender, humour-filled, engaged, comforting way you can imagine. After all, he is the source of all the things that you love most about this world.
If you want to, and you ask him, you will certainly Meet the Father.
You could say something like this:
“Father God, I want to know you. I want to know you like Jesus knows you. I want to experience you as my Abba, my Daddy. Father me in the way that I have longed to be fathered. Come and find me.”
He’s going to find you and love you to life.
It’s who he is.
